More than twenty years of showing up.
Founded in the spirit of neighbourly care, we've grown from a small initiative above a local bakery to a cornerstone of the St. Margaret's Bay community.
Our Story
Our Story
- FOUNDED
The St. Margaret's Bay Food Bank was founded more than 20 years ago by Milton Hubley of Seabright, with support from the St. Margaret's Bay Lions Club. It first operated from a space above White Sails Bakery in Tantallon.
- IN 2009,
The food bank moved to the basement of the Shambhala Centre on Peggy's Cove Road. As the need for support continued to grow, more space and resources were needed to serve the community.
- TODAY,
We now operate from 9A Sonny's Road in Upper Tantallon, serving hundreds of families each month across St. Margaret's Bay and neighbouring communities including: Peggy's Cove, Hammonds Plains, and surrounding areas. For more than two decades, our mission has remained the same: helping people access the food and support they need with dignity and respect.

Food insecurity impacts individuals and families in every community. The purpose of the St. Margaret's Bay Food Bank is to help reduce food insecurity across the communities we serve by providing food assistance, household essentials, and seasonal support throughout the year, designed to help people maintain dignity and stability during difficult times.
Donations from individuals, businesses, schools, community groups, and other organizations make this work possible. Donated funds help us purchase essential grocery items not always available through food drives. Every donation helps provide support to people when they need it most.

Non-perishables, perishables like fresh produce, milk, eggs and meat provided monthly to residents in need throughout the catchment area.

Affordable clothing, toys, and household items for the community. Every dollar raised goes directly towards the Food Bank to help local families.

CHARITABLE STATUS
The St. Margaret's Bay Food Bank is a registered charitable organization in good standing with the Registry of Joint Stock Companies, and a member of Feed Nova Scotia. We are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and supported by a dedicated team of staff and volunteers who work together to ensure food and resources reach those who need them most.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of our many community partners, including the Churches of the St. Margaret's Bay area, Bay Seniors, Bay Skate Shop, Transition Bay (Crossroads Community Garden), Crossroads Artists, the SMB Community Enterprise Centre, and the organizations featured below.
These partnerships strengthen our ability to support families and individuals across St. Margaret's Bay through food assistance, transportation support, fundraising initiatives, wellness programs, community outreach, and collaborative events.
Together, we help ensure more people can access the food, services, and support they need.
